| -- GIS is a relatively new technology and a relatively new way of doing business that links a great deal of information used by various governmental agencies with the locations
to which that data refers. -- GIS takes information from databases and puts it on a map as layers of information, allowing you to see that information visually and highlighting data for better analysis. As one example, GIS has enabled the Auditor’s Office to fairly assess the Current Agricultural Use Value of farm property within our county by allowing us to intersect soil data, land use data, and parcel data, to determine the number of acres of each soil type a parcel has employed in farming and therefore the taxable value of that property.
-- The Crawford County GIS Web Mapping System website shows the boundaries and ownership information of all parcels within the County, as well as city, township, subdivision, tax district, and school district boundaries, all of which overlay an aerial photograph of the entire County.
It also includes road and railroad rights of way, road centerlines, address points, the 100 year floodplain, USDA soil mapping, rivers and streams, and 5 and 10 foot contour lines which show elevation. -- Our office formed a countywide GIS Committee, which promotes cooperation and mutual support in the development and continuous update of local databases and computerized mapping, as well as the
sharing of that information to more efficiently and effectively serve the needs of Crawford County and its citizens. |
